Project Overview
Introduction
Underhill was contracted by PCL to provide surveying services for the construction of the Whistle Bend Continuing Care Facility—a $150 million project designed to meet the long-term care needs of Yukon’s growing population. The 150-bed facility is one of the territory’s largest public infrastructure investments to date.
Project Challenges
The project required high-accuracy layout and as-built data for structural and civil components throughout a multi-year construction period. Coordination with various trades and tight scheduling made reliability and responsiveness essential.
Underhill’s Approach
From groundbreaking to final completion, Underhill worked on-site to support every major construction phase. Services included topographic surveys, building control layout (foundations, grids, columns, bolts), and full utility layout for electrical and plumbing systems. Our team also conducted volume computations, civil layout for parking lots, sidewalks, and roads, as well as ongoing plumb as-builts and structural monitoring surveys.
All deliverables were supported by digital modeling to ensure seamless communication with engineers, contractors, and project managers.
Notable Outcomes
- Surveyed entire project lifecycle for Yukon’s largest continuing care facility
- Delivered precise layout and as-builts to multiple trades
- Enabled smooth civil infrastructure layout including roads and drainage
- Ensured alignment, plumb, and structural compliance throughout construction
Technical Highlights
- Topographic surveys for site preparation
- Volume computations for excavation and fill
- Layout of foundations, walls, columns, grids, bolts, and base plates
- Electrical and plumbing layout across all facility wings
- Plumb as-built surveys for vertical alignment
- Civil layout for sidewalks, gutters, roads, and parking lots
- Structural monitoring surveys during key construction phases
Project Impact
Underhill’s full-scope surveying helped bring one of Yukon’s largest healthcare investments to life. Our precise layout and structural monitoring ensured the facility was built to exact standards, supporting safety and functionality for generations to come. By coordinating seamlessly with multiple trades, we enabled efficient construction of critical infrastructure serving Yukon’s aging population.
