Project Overview

Introduction

Westshore Terminals, located at Roberts Bank in Delta, BC, is the largest coal export facility in Canada and the most active coal terminal in North America. Underhill has been providing essential survey services at this site for over three decades, supporting both daily operations and major infrastructure upgrades.

Project Challenges

With continuous operations, heavy equipment, and critical marine infrastructure, Westshore requires precise and timely surveying to maintain productivity and safety. Equipment alignment, foundation integrity, and berth modifications all require high-accuracy data without disrupting terminal activity.

Underhill’s Approach

Underhill’s long-term role at Westshore includes a full range of control, construction, and as-built surveys. Our teams have performed high-precision alignment of stacker-reclaimers, slew bearings, shiploaders, and rotary coal car dumpers. We’ve also supported structural documentation of conveyors, berths, and utility upgrades through detailed CAD and digital modeling deliverables.

This work involves ongoing collaboration with terminal owners, consultants, and contractors to provide consistent, trusted survey data across all project phases.

Notable Outcomes

  • Over 30 years of continuous survey support at Canada’s busiest coal export terminal
  • Precise machine alignment surveys contributing to operational efficiency
  • Comprehensive as-built data for berth, dumper, and conveyor infrastructure
  • Trusted long-term service provider for ongoing infrastructure modernization

Technical Highlights

  • Stacker-reclaimer rail alignment and boom mast angle measurement
  • Slew bearing flatness surveys for stacker-reclaimers
  • Berth and shiploader as-built surveys
  • Rotary coal car dumper alignment and condition documentation
  • Conveyor layout and elevation control
  • Establishment of robust horizontal and vertical control networks
  • CAD-based digital modeling for infrastructure records

Project Impact

Underhill’s survey expertise has played a critical role in keeping Westshore Terminals operating at peak performance. Our precision alignment and infrastructure documentation support safe, efficient coal exports that power global industries. The terminal’s ongoing modernization is underpinned by decades of trusted data from Underhill. This long-standing collaboration helps sustain one of North America’s most vital energy logistics hubs.
