Project Overview
Introduction
Built for Vancouver’s Expo ’86, Science World underwent a major seismic upgrade in 2006. To support this critical infrastructure work, Underhill provided detailed surveying and 3D scanning of the structure and deck built over False Creek.
Survey Challenges and Scope
The project required careful coordination to core over 200 holes into the deck without damaging embedded utilities or structural elements. The work was part of a broader seismic retrofit that included grout column injection into the seabed.
Underhill’s Contributions
- 3D Laser Scanning Captured precise structural details of the building and deck to inform renovation plans.
- As-Built Surveys Documented the existing layout of utilities and infrastructure under the deck for safe drilling and retrofitting.
- Control Surveys Ensured survey accuracy across the site, which included a complex pile-supported platform over water.
Project Impact
This work enabled the structural engineers to execute seismic retrofits with precision, helping to extend the life and safety of one of Vancouver’s most iconic public facilities.
