Project Name Neptune Bulk Terminals Surveying & CAD Modeling
Location North Vancouver, British Columbia
Date 2005–2020 (ongoing)

Project Overview

Introduction

Neptune Bulk Terminals is one of Canada’s largest multi-product export terminals, handling coal, potash, and vegetable oil. Located in North Vancouver, it accounts for over 5% of the country’s offshore exports. Since 2005, Underhill has been a key survey provider at the site, supporting expansion, modernization, and infrastructure upgrades.

Project Challenges

Operating in a live industrial terminal requires accurate, safe, and phased surveying to support continuous operations. Survey data must integrate with legacy infrastructure, align with provincial datums, and serve multiple engineering teams working on upgrades to rail and marine systems.

Underhill’s Approach

Underhill began by installing a high-precision geodetic control network tied to the Provincial Active Control System and legacy datums. We’ve provided topographic surveys, construction layout, and 3D laser scanning for critical infrastructure including conveyors, shiploaders, rail lines, and bulk storage facilities.

We also conducted rail alignment design for Track 7 and the South Yard reconfiguration. CAD data from existing site maps was compiled into a unified coordinate system to support engineering workflows.

Notable Outcomes

  • Ongoing surveying support for one of Canada’s largest export terminals
  • Accurate 3D scans for bulk vessel capacity analysis
  • Precision rail and conveyor system layout and alignment
  • Integrated CAD models and geospatial records for infrastructure management

Technical Highlights

  • Installation of a geodetic control network tied to provincial systems
  • Engineering-grade as-built surveys of shiploaders, dumpers, conveyors, and rail
  • CAD compilation of legacy base maps into site coordinate system
  • Rail alignment design for Track 7 and South Yard improvements
  • Construction layout for conveyor systems and rail expansions
  • 3D laser scanning of product vessels for volumetric analysis

Project Impact

Underhill’s precise surveying and 3D modeling have been essential to Neptune Bulk Terminals’ ongoing modernization and expansion. Our work has enabled efficient rail reconfigurations, improved conveyor alignment, and accurate vessel volume assessments—all without disrupting terminal operations. This support helps Neptune maintain its critical role in Canada’s export infrastructure, moving millions of tonnes of goods safely and efficiently each year.
