Project Overview
Introduction
In 2011, Underhill was contracted to support the replacement of the BC Place roof in Vancouver—a landmark infrastructure upgrade that introduced the world’s largest cable-supported retractable stadium roof.
Project Challenges
The complexity of erecting a 135-ton cable-stayed roof structure spanning over 76,000 m² required extremely accurate spatial data. Surveyors had to measure and verify mast placement, cable alignment, and tension geometry with high precision during construction.
Underhill’s Approach
Underhill provided detailed construction layout and engineering surveys throughout the project. Our team used 3D laser scanning to model critical roof elements, monitor mast positioning, and support alignment checks for the 35 km of cable system. The resulting data was integrated into engineering models to ensure design accuracy and performance of the suspension system.
Notable Outcomes
- Contributed to the successful installation of the world’s largest cable-supported retractable roof
- Delivered high-precision 3D data to support structural alignment and installation
- Enabled real-time coordination between engineering and construction teams
Technical Highlights
- 3D laser scanning of structural roof components
- Construction layout surveys for mast and cable placement
- Engineering-grade verification of suspension bridge system
- Support for geometry control of 36 roof masts and tension cables
- Survey integration with 3D modeling systems for as-built validation
Project Impact
Underhill’s precise 3D surveys were essential to the successful installation of the world’s largest retractable stadium roof. By enabling real-time verification of mast positions and cable alignment, we helped engineering teams execute one of Canada’s most complex construction feats. This work contributed to the renewal of a national landmark and set a benchmark for large-scale structural surveying.
